Description
Inconel 601 is a high-performance nickel-chromium alloy designed for exceptional resistance to oxidation, carburization, and high-temperature corrosion. Composed primarily of 58-63% nickel and 21-25% chromium, it retains its strength and structural integrity even at temperatures up to 2200°F (1204°C), making it ideal for aerospace and power generation applications.
In comparison to other alloys like Inconel 600, Inconel Alloy 601 offers enhanced resistance to sulfur and chlorine-induced corrosion, which is critical in chemical processing and furnace environments. Its excellent weldability and resistance to thermal cycling make it versatile for use in demanding applications like turbine blades, heat exchangers, and furnace components.

Processing of Inconel 601
When processing Inconel 601, the following are precautions
Hot working
Can be performed in the temperature range of approximately 980-1230°C (1800-2250°F) (e.g., forging, extrusion). Avoid prolonged exposure to the rapid grain growth range of approximately 650-870°C (1200-1600°F). Solution annealing heat treatment is usually required after processing.
Cold working
Can be performed successfully (e.g., rolling, drawing, spinning), but requires higher power than carbon steel or austenitic stainless steel. Cold working significantly hardens the material, and annealing between processing steps may be necessary.
Machining
Machinability in the solution annealed state is similar to that of austenitic stainless steels (e.g., 304), but the material is more viscous and tougher, and work hardening occurs. Rigid equipment, sharp carbide tools, slow speeds and high feeds, and adequate cooling are recommended. The cold-worked state is harder and more difficult to machine.
Welding
Possesses good weldability. Common methods include GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SMAW (metal arc welding). Welding consumables with matching compositions (such as ERNiCrFe-5) are recommended. Care should be taken to prevent overheating and grain growth during welding. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
