Description

Hastelloy C276 plate, a high-performance nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy commonly known as UNS N10276, is renowned for its exceptional resistance to strong oxidizing and reducing agents, as well as localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice corrosion. With a molybdenum content of 15-17% and a chromium content of 14.5-16.5%, it outperforms other corrosion-resistant alloys in aggressive environments such as wet chlorine, hypochlorite, and nitric acid mixtures.

Its excellent weldability ensures structural integrity even after fabrication. For example, Hastelloy C276 can outlast stainless steel in flue gas scrubbers or chemical reactors, significantly reducing maintenance costs. Available in thicknesses up to 50 mm and compliant with standards such as ASTM B575, it is a reliable choice for critical applications in chemical processing, pollution control, and the marine industry.

Our Hastelloy C276 plate offers a wide range of sizes and exceptional processing consistency, ensuring the long-term reliability and safety of your critical equipment in the harshest environments, significantly reducing maintenance costs and the risk of downtime.

FAQ

Below are some frequently asked questions about Hastelloy C276. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.

It performs particularly well in the following environments:

  • Wet chlorine, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide solutions;
  • Sulfuric, hydrochloric, and hydrofluoric acids (especially at low to medium concentrations, in the presence of impurities, and at high temperatures);
  • Phosphoric acid (at various concentrations and temperatures, including wet process acids with high impurities);
  • Organic acids such as acetic and formic acids;
  • Environments containing chlorides (such as seawater and brines) offer excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

C276 has excellent weldability. Recommended welding methods:

Welding methods: Shielded Tungsten Inert Gas Welding (GTAW/TIG), Metal Inert Gas Welding (GMAW/MIG), and Stick Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).

Filler Material: Typically, ERNiCrMo-4 welding wire or ENiCrMo-4 welding rod, matched to the base metal composition, is used.

Key Points: Maintain low heat input and ensure adequate inert gas shielding (with back shielding gas if necessary) to prevent oxidation in the weld area and sensitization of the heat-affected zone.

The typical final heat treatment is solution annealing, which involves heating to around 1121°C followed by a rapid water quench. This dissolves any precipitated phases (such as μ phase) and restores the alloy to its most corrosion-resistant state. Stress relief heat treatment is strictly prohibited, as it may cause the precipitation of detrimental phases at grain boundaries, which in turn reduces corrosion resistance.

Normally nonmagnetic (non-magnetic).

Hastelloy C276 is an austenitic nickel-based alloy. Its crystal structure makes it completely nonmagnetic in the annealed (softened) state.

Exception: After cold working (e.g., bending, cutting), the surface or processed areas may become slightly magnetic, but the magnetism is very weak.

Hastelloy C22 is an upgraded version of C276.

  • Chemical Composition (Key Difference): C22 has a higher chromium (Cr) content (20-22.5%) and a slightly higher molybdenum (Mo) content (12.5-14.5%). C276 has a lower Cr content (14.5-16.5%) and a Mo content of 15-17%.
  • Corrosion Resistance: C22 significantly outperforms C276 in pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in oxidizing media (such as hot Fe⁺, Cu⁺⁺ brines, and hypochlorites) and in the welded state. C22 also has a wider operating temperature range.
  • Weldability: C22 offers improved weldability, exhibits less corrosion degradation in the heat-affected zone after welding, and is less prone to the precipitation of harmful phases.
